The Foolish Old Man Who Moved Mountains

Long, long ago, there was an old man called Yu Gong. His house was surrounded by two huge mountains, Taihang Mountain and Wangwu Mountain. These mountains were so high and blocking his way that it was very inconvenient for his family to get in and out.

Yu Gong was determined to move the mountains. He believed that with persistence and hard work, he would be able to achieve his goal. He convinced his children to help him, and they all started digging using hoes and baskets, and hauling the dirt to the sea, far away. Day in and day out they kept digging, never giving up despite the daunting task.

A wise old man named Zhi Sou saw what Yu Gong was doing and said to him, "You are old; you are trying to do the impossible." Yu Gong replied, "Yes, I am old and I will soon be dead, but I have children, and when they die, their children will carry on, and the mountain will get smaller and smaller."

Zhi Sou was moved by Yu Gong's determination and wisdom. He told Yu Gong that he would send two gods to help him move the mountains. And so, the gods came and helped Yu Gong and his family lift the mountains, and they were finally moved.

This story of Yu Gong's perseverance and determination has been passed down through generations as a symbol of hope and resilience. It teaches us that anything is possible if we work hard and never give up.
